You May Watch More TV Stations – FOR FREE!

Without knowing you may well be in a position to receive, FREE OF CHARGE, more TV stations then you actually think.  As many are aware Malta has gone through the digital siwtchover with the result that Maltese viewers may receive SIX Maltese TV stations (i.e. TVM, ONE, NET, Smash, Favourite and E22). {nl}

{nl}

In actual fact due to your location you may actually receive more digital TV stations than you think and these for FREE!!!  The Association can confirm that from certain localities such as Pembroke, San Gwann, Valletta and Floriana the following TV stations may be received: {nl}

In addition, one may also receive two digital radio stations namely: RTL 102.5 and RAI Radio FD 4. {nl}

Several may ask what is needed to be able to receive these channels.  On the market one may well find apposite digital antennas and if need be digital boosters.  If consumers shop around there are outlets which are more then ready to give advice prior to purchasing these antennas since one also has to test location and signal strength. {nl}

In actual fact we are enjoying from the spill over of TV digital transmittors in Sicily, as we used to a few years back when Maltese viewers used to fix VHF and UHF antennas to be able to watch Italian TV stations.  This is no different. {nl}

Also, bear in mind that this time round, unlike we used to do in the past, with only ONE antenna you may receive the above stations together with the 6 Maltese stations. {nl}

As to prices, it all depends on the type of antenna that is needed.  A high gain digital antenna (a 17dB) is sold for around 70 euros.   {nl}

A step or a quantum leap?

At the end of last year, a Bill to set up the Malta Competition and Consumer Affairs Authority (MCCAA) was published. Unfortunately, there was very little public discussion about the new structure that is being proposed. The reason is that public attention was dominated by competition issues which, if anything, made consumers more aware of the need that something quite urgent and radical must be done in this area.

Regulatory consistency benefits consumers

Examining the way regulators address the specific behaviour of operators in specific markets is of interest particularly to the other set of participants – consumers. {nl}

{nl}

Last December, consumers were furious because two pay TV companies dropped from their channel line-up two popular stations: Living TV and Comedy Central. The Consumer Department, now in the form of the Malta Competition and Consumer Affairs Authority, acting through the Office for Consumer Affairs, was called upon to look into the matter as consumers demanded an expeditious reaction from their “watchdog”. {nl}

The Market and Alcohol Consumption

Some time ago a small controversy cropped up about alcohol consumption. This was spurred by the introduction of new legislation regarding the sale of alcoholic drinks from confectionaries. The aim of the new legal notice was to restrict the sale of alcoholic drinks from confectionaries.
